Many of the online digital photo printing services presented here provide editing tools, photo gifts (like photo mugs and T-shirts), and online photo sharing. In our comparison we look at quality of prints produced and cost of prints, because for most people, these are the two most important considerations. The comparisons made here for digital photo printing services in terms of which service provides the highest quality prints, is a general consensus found from various sources on the Internet.
By far the best two in terms of quality of prints produced are Kodak EasyShare Gallery (formerly Ofoto) and Shutterfly. Digital photo printing service Kodak EasyShare Gallery is a little bit cheaper then Shutterfly. Kodak EasyShare Gallery prints are currently cheaper by 3¢ per print, and they have cheaper bulk prints (19¢ each for orders over 100). Shutterfly and Kodak EasyShare are about the same in terms of quality.
The digital photo printing service which produces the cheapest prints (at 12 cents per print) but at the same time with no significant decrease in quality is Snapfish. Their overall quality is good, and they are the cheapest we have seen where quality is not compromised. Of course there are other digital photo printing companies which are cheaper, but you would be taking a chance in terms of quality. Snapfish is about half the cost per print compared to Kodak EasyShare and Shutterfly.
The most convenient and quickest digital photo printing company is Wal-Mart.com Photo Center. You can go to the WalMart.com Photo Center website and upload your images, and pick up the prints from your local center in about an hour. The draw back is that their seems to be a variation in quality between Walmart’s different digital photo printing services across the country. You would have to try your local Walmart.com Photo center to see if the quality is satisfactory.
The following is our Digital Photo Printing Services Directory. The only way to really know if a service provides what you are looking for is to try it. This directory provides a starting point. We did not include the shipping cost because these costs come out about the same for each service, which is about $4.00 to $5.00 per hundred prints. For fewer prints, shipping cost is less. Also, prices per print can vary depending on how many prints you want to order. The more prints, the lower the price. Many offer free prints with your first order. The prices shown here are the lowest price available at the time of this writing. These companies are very competitive and prices tend to drop over time. Our top four are at the top of the chart, the rest are alphabetized.

If you own a digital photo printing company and you are not on the above list, send me an email at Thomas Sullivan and I will add your site to the list. I will need your URL and cheapest price per print.

Creative Challenge: High Contrast
From what we’ve learned from Kier Selinsky, in a previous Pro Tip, contrast is best explained by its extremes. Extremely high-contrast photos have a lot of white and black and very little (or nothing) in between. While this effect is more obvious with black and white photos, it’s also very striking in color, as shown [...]
